Traditional Thai-Style Riverside Homestay at Mae Klong River in Ban Pong, Ratchaburi

When talking about Ratchaburi province, many might think of Suan Phueng or Damnoen Saduak Floating Market. But for me, mr.hotsia, another small corner that invites you to pause and truly experience riverside life is this traditional Thai-style homestay by the Mae Klong River in Ban Pong.

The large Mae Klong River flows through Ban Pong district before heading south to Samut Songkhram. This part of the river remains calm and pure, home to many fish and river prawns, with little disturbance from humans. This makes “Khum Thanthima,” a traditional Thai homestay where I stayed, stand out as an enchanting riverside retreat.

Khum Thanthima is a genuine old wooden Thai-style house owned and carefully maintained by P' Nok Supharit, an AirAsia pilot. The two houses sit right by the river, featuring sturdy and warm old wooden structures. The first house is two stories: the upper floor has a bedroom and a traditional living room preserving the authentic atmosphere of a classic Thai house. The ground floor includes another bedroom, a kitchen, and a dining table, fully equipped for self-cooking.

The second house is also a two-story Thai house but only the upper floor is available for guests. It features a spacious veranda, bedroom, and an open living area that fully welcomes the river breeze. Additionally, there is a wooden raft on the river with two bedrooms and private bathrooms separated from the bedrooms, ideal for groups or families wanting to sleep close to the water.

When I, mr.hotsia, stayed there, the atmosphere was wonderful — the gentle sound of flowing water, fish swimming past the raft, and river prawns that could be caught under the raft made me feel like I had traveled back in time. Such traditional Thai riverside houses are rare nowadays. This place is perfect for those wanting to escape the city's hustle and enjoy a true slow-life retreat.

For those who enjoy fun activities, I recommend bringing simple fishing gear like rods, nets, or traps to catch fresh fish or river prawns from the Mae Klong River. If you like cooking, the homestay is fully equipped, and you can buy fresh ingredients from Ban Pong market to grill and cook right in front of the house.

Travel and Trip Recommendations from mr.hotsia

If I were to design a trip to visit Khum Thanthima homestay, I would suggest starting from Bangkok and driving to Ban Pong. After stopping for lunch at Ban Pong market, which offers a variety of local and fresh seafood dishes, check into the homestay to relax or prepare your grilling equipment for a fun time with family and friends.

One night here will let you experience the tranquility of the Mae Klong River in a setting almost like a scene from a period film. The sounds of crickets, flowing water, and the cool river breeze will lead you into true relaxation.

In the morning, I, mr.hotsia, usually spend late morning visiting Wat Khanon in Photharam, which is not far away. There, the Wat Khanon Shadow Puppet Museum is very interesting — a rare cultural heritage — before heading back or visiting other destinations.
