Chau Doc Bus Station – The Gateway to the Border Town of An Giang
If you are planning to travel to Chau Doc city in An Giang province, northwest Vietnam, a key junction between Vietnam and Cambodia, one place I, mr.hotsia, had to pass through and experience myself isChau Doc Bus StationThis station is located about 3 kilometers from the city center, making it a convenient connection point for travelers heading to important cities around An Giang province or even continuing on to Cambodia.
When I arrived at Chau Doc Bus Station in January 2012, the first thing I noticed was the lively atmosphere with both locals and tourists. Although the station is not as large as those in big cities, it offers a variety of bus routes, including buses to Long Xuyen, the capital of An Giang province, or connections to other cities around the Mekong Delta.
Easy onward travel with agents offering hotel and border-crossing boat services
Here, agents or vendors assist tourists by recommending accommodations in Chau Doc city. I personally used this service on my first visit. They provide useful information about hotels at various price levels, from budget stays to 4-5 star hotels, which is very helpful for those who haven't planned or booked accommodation in advance.
Another highlight of this bus station is the border-crossing boat service to Phnom Penh, Cambodia, with options for both fast and slow boats. The fast boat takes about 2-3 hours, making cross-border travel easy and quick. Additionally, there are affordable motorcycle taxis from the bus station to Chau Doc city center, costing only 20-30 baht per person, a convenient and quick option for travelers who don’t want to carry heavy luggage far.
Experience the atmosphere of Chau Doc through the bus station
Although the bus station is a bit far from the city center, once you get off the bus, getting into town is not difficult. I usually choose motorcycle taxis here because they are economical and allow close contact with the lifestyle of this small town. Along the way, you’ll see bustling markets and street vendors selling local goods and foods like grilled sticky rice with pork and nem phan, which are my favorite dishes here. Chau Doc is a small town famous as an important waterway trading hub on the Bassac River flowing through the city. The town’s highlight is its border location blending diverse cultures and ethnicities, especially Vietnamese and Khmer people living harmoniously. Personal Experience from mr.hotsia
I clearly remember once taking a fast boat from Chau Doc to Phnom Penh, a popular choice for tourists crossing the border by water. The boat pier is close to the bus station, making it very convenient. Boats depart every 10-15 minutes, so waiting time is short. The fast boat takes about 2 hours to reach the destination. It was an exciting and comfortable experience.
Additionally, near the pier there are shops and food stalls selling local dishes. My favorite is the grilled button squid with a spicy and fresh flavor. (If you want to see how this dish is made and what it looks like, check outVietnamese Grilled Button Squid) There is also Vietnamese chicken biryani, which tastes very good.
