Border Crossing Experience at Laobao Checkpoint to Central Vietnam, Huế City
I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to travel from Thailand to Central Vietnam using the border crossing at Laobao Checkpoint. Actually, the checkpoint on the Laos side is called “Savannakhet Checkpoint,” while on the Vietnam side it is called “Laobao Checkpoint,” sometimes also referred to as “Laobaw Checkpoint.” This route is convenient and popular among travelers who want to experience the atmosphere of Central Vietnam cities like Huế, Da Nang, and Hội An without flying or taking complicated routes.
Starting from Mukdahan Province in Thailand, I crossed into Savannakhet Province in Laos. There are two main travel options to continue to Central Vietnam here. The first is to take a bus from Savannakhet Bus Station, which departs at 10:00 AM and 10:00 PM directly to Huế or Hanoi. The other option, which I chose, was to buy a ticket at the Savannakhet Hotel, where the bus departs every other day at 8:00 AM and arrives in Huế around 6:00 PM. This method is more convenient because you don’t have to wait for buses or the checkpoint to open late at night, which can be tiring and chaotic.
At the immigration checkpoint, a small fee is collected. For border crossings in early 2011, no entry form was required; just a passport with more than six months validity was enough. I believe in the future this process will become even easier as many countries in the region are relaxing document requirements. Thai travelers should keep a close watch on updates.
Arrival Atmosphere in Huế and Finding Accommodation
The bus I took arrived in Huế in the evening, as the city was entering nighttime. The atmosphere along the Perfume River began to come alive. I stopped at a hotel in the city first because I was tired from traveling and wanted to rest before exploring the city the next day.
For those interested in accommodation information in Huế, I have written recommendations in the articleHotels, Lodgings, and Guesthouses in HuếAccommodation in Huế is reasonably priced. Good air-conditioned rooms cost around 300 baht per night, with convenient Wi-Fi access. They are located not far from the Perfume River, within walking distance to many tourist attractions.
Strolling Around Huế City at Night
After a good rest in the morning, I immediately went out to explore Huế. The city’s charm lies in its peacefulness and the beautiful atmosphere along the Perfume River, especially in the evening from about 6:00 to 8:00 PM. The bridge over the Perfume River is beautifully lit with colorful lights, and young Vietnamese people gather by the riverbank, creating a very chill and warm feeling.Night Walks in HuếI recommend taking a walk along this river to truly experience the lifestyle of locals and visiting tourists.
Huế Cuisine You Must Try
Of course, when you come to Huế, you must not miss trying the local food. The cuisine here is distinctly different from Hanoi or Hội An, such as hot noodle soup called Mi, which is not pho like in Hanoi or the broth soup like in Hội An, but a hot noodle dish served especially in Huế’s cool winter weather, which helps warm you up nicely. You can also try curry rice dishes costing no more than 20 baht at many local restaurants, which are delicious and good value.Food and Dining in HuếThis is one of the charms that makes me want to revisit Huế many times.

Traveling to Other Cities in Central Vietnam
After spending some time in Huế, many may want to travel to nearby cities like Da Nang or Hội An. I recommend taking the train from Huế to Da Nang to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Lang Co along the way, a route favored by chill travelers like me.Lang Co City between Huế and Da Nang, VietnamA scenic stopover not to be missed.
For those interested in train travel, I have shared my experience of taking the train from Hanoi through Vinh to Huế, which is another interesting option for those who want to truly experience the charm of Vietnam.Train from Hanoi, Vinh to HuếFeaturing sleeper cars, air-conditioned rooms, and a dining car with full services.
