Vietnamese Egg Pan at Buon Ma Thuot, the coffee city of Đắk Lắk
I, mr.hotsia, recently had the chance to visit Vietnam again, especially Buon Ma Thuot in Đắk Lắk province, the capital of the Central Highlands and also consideredthe coffee capital of the worldHere, besides the strong coffee flavor that everyone must try, I also discovered a local dish equally tempting, which is the “Vietnamese Egg Pan” or locally calledbanh mi oplaitself.
I must say I roamed around several breakfast spots in Buon Ma Thuot and found authentic Vietnamese egg pan places that are generously filled with ingredients, fragrant broth, and rich flavors. It’s not just ordinary fried eggs but an egg pan with broth and various side dishes, served with Vietnamese-style French bread called “banh mi,” which is crispy on the outside and soft inside, making a perfect harmony when eaten together.
The place I recommend in Buon Ma Thuot is a small shop in the morning market or near the hotel where I stayed. I stayed atMAI ANH hotelwhich is next to Coop Mart. It’s very convenient because within walking distance you can find local eateries and fresh markets. There are many good coffee shops around the hotel, perfect for coffee lovers and local food enthusiasts like me.
Vietnamese Egg Pan Banh Mi Opla is not just ordinary fried eggs
Here, the Vietnamese egg pan is made by frying eggs in a flat pan, then pouring a broth infused with spices and some meat such as minced pork or a little Vietnamese sausage. This broth gives the eggs a mellow flavor without greasiness. It’s eaten with hot banh mi bread that is crispy and fragrant from butter or margarine spread before baking.
When I took the first bite, I felt the genuine local breakfast experience unlike any other. The warmth from the eggs and broth poured over the bread fills the mouth with aroma. It doesn’t need much seasoning, just a little chili sauce is perfect. This place doesn’t overload ingredients like our local egg pans but offers a simple feeling full of care in selecting ingredients.
Buon Ma Thuot, a city where coffee and local food walk side by side
Eating Vietnamese egg pan in Buon Ma Thuot is inseparable from the city’s atmosphere. Buon Ma Thuot is located on a plateau 536 meters above sea level, giving it a cool climate suitable for growing high-quality coffee. The coffee here is world-renowned. Besides the egg pan dish, I also tried Vietnamese coffee at several small coffee shops in town, each with unique brewing styles and decorations.
I recommend taking a stroll in the morning market andBuon Ma Thuot Marketwhich is full of local atmosphere, where you can see the lifestyle of the city’s residents and ethnic minorities who are part of Đắk Lắk province. Enjoying Vietnamese egg pan with hot coffee in this setting is a joy that makes the long journey worthwhile.
An experience not found in typical travel guides
I, mr.hotsia, don’t just follow famous or highly reviewed places but like to stop by small shops favored by locals, such as this Vietnamese egg pan shop. Though it looks simple, the taste impressed me deeply. It’s a feeling of having breakfast with simplicity but full of attention to detail.
I also talked with the shop owner who said this style of egg pan has been passed down for many years, and they use fresh ingredients daily to maintain consistent flavor. This is the charm of street food in Buon Ma Thuot, a city that tourists may pass by unknowingly but will surely fall in love with once they try it, just like me.
A Buon Ma Thuot trip you shouldn’t miss
If you visit Buon Ma Thuot, don’t forget to set aside time early in the morning to walk the morning market and try Vietnamese egg pan at a local shop. Afterwards, enjoy strong coffee at one of the many coffee shops available. There are also local dishes likeauthentic Vietnamese Nem Nuongwhich I have recommended in a previous article, another must-try dish.
For accommodation, I suggest looking around Coop Mart or the tank monument area in the city center, as it’s convenient with night markets and a variety of restaurants to satisfy your appetite. You can read more of my reviews atRecommended Affordable and Good Hotels
