Thai Communities in Northern Vietnam: Life and Culture in Lai Châu
When talking about Northern Vietnam, many might think of the bustling Hanoi or the beautiful Sapa. But for me, mr.hotsia, another equally interesting perspective is experiencing the lifestyle of Thai people in Northern Vietnam at Lai Châu province, located on the northwestern border adjacent to China and Laos. This province is surrounded by high mountains and small plains amid fresh, cool air all year round, especially in high places like valleys and the Bap Ho plateau.
I had the opportunity to visit Lai Châu in May 2015 and met the Tay ethnic group, considered part of the White Thai, Black Thai, and Tai peoples who speak the Thai-Kadai language group similar to ours. Simple everyday words like “father,” “mother,” “duck,” “chicken,” “eat,” “rice,” and “fish” made me feel close and warmly welcomed, like coming home.
Thai-style Houses and Architecture in Lai Châu
What caught my special interest was the housing of Thai people in Northern Vietnam. Their homes are still built in the traditional raised-floor style, with wide verandas and high roofs covered with a tile-like material made from clay. Many houses remarkably retain their original style, although some materials have been updated over time. Walking through several villages, I found these homes truly reflect a simple lifestyle harmoniously blending with nature.
For those interested in more details about Northern Vietnamese housing, I have previously written about it, which you can read here:Northern Vietnamese HousingThis will help provide an overall picture of the differences and similarities of homes in this region.
Life in Lai Châu: Morning Markets and Local Food
I stayed two nights in the provincial capital of Lai Châu, also called Lai Chau town, choosing the hotel “Phuong Thang kinh chao quy khach,” located in the city center. It’s conveniently close to the morning market and a nearby lake. The morning market atmosphere was lively, offering a variety of goods from fresh vegetables and fruits to local foods and various items. I enjoyed observing the simple yet fascinating daily life of the locals here.
Food is another aspect I love exploring, and Lai Châu did not disappoint. Local dishes often use natural ingredients around, such as sticky rice, grilled pork, nem thang, and fresh vegetables with unique, mellow flavors. I tried the special Vietnamese chicken biryani here, which has authentic Vietnamese spices and was so delicious I had to order several more plates. Another recommendation is Vietnamese nem thang, with its distinctive sour-sweet taste and crispy outside with a soft inside. You can see how it’s made and taste it in this video.Vietnamese Nem ThangFor a truly exciting eating experience, try the Vietnamese grilled button squid featured in this clip.Vietnamese Grilled Button SquidFoods I sampled at the market
Life and Culture in Lai Châu
Lai Châu is home to 20 diverse ethnic groups, each preserving their traditional cultural identity well. I enjoyed visiting hill tribe villages like Sin Ho village, a popular destination for tourists seeking an authentic rural lifestyle experience. The area features high mountains and many rivers, creating a beautiful and peaceful surrounding atmosphere.
The average temperature here is about 21 degrees Celsius, but the highlands remain cool year-round with alternating misty clouds through the four seasons, making nature and cultural exploration a memorable experience.
Travel and Accommodation in Lai Châu
For traveling to Lai Châu province, I recommend staying in the city center or near the lake area for easy morning and evening strolls, access to the morning market, and convenient dining options. The lakeside atmosphere is a great spot to relax, and the city offers many hotels. The one I stayed at, “Phuong Thang kinh chao quy khach,” blends old and new styles well, within walking distance to the morning market and lake, and without massage or karaoke services that might disrupt the peaceful ambiance.

Summary of Experience from mr.hotsia
Walking through the Thai villages in Northern Vietnam’s Lai Châu is not just about nature or beautiful mountain views; it’s about experiencing a lifestyle surprisingly similar to ours—in language, living, and architecture—that still preserves its unique identity well. I, mr.hotsia, recommend that if you want to break away from typical travel routines, Lai Châu should definitely be on your list.
