I was born in Bang Bo, Khlong Samrong, so I know a bit about boats. Coming to Vietnam, I was especially interested in boats because I wanted to know the similarities and differences between Vietnamese and Thai boats. I once read Lonely Planet and saw round boats in the book, which made me look for round boats or basket boats on this trip to Vietnam, and finally I got to ride one. The basket boat is round, about 1.20 meters wide, made of woven wood and sealed with some kind of glue.
It is used as a short-distance rowing boat between large and small boats. For example, fishing boats have this type to row ashore. I found a basket boat parked in Hoi An with no owner around, so I put it in the water and sat down to play. This basket boat is more stable than I thought, it doesn't tip or capsize easily. In Hoi An, there are also rowboats like those in Bang Bo. Other boats include rowing boats, fishing boats, passenger boats. Vietnamese boats have eyes painted on both small and large boats, which represent the boat's guardian spirit.
As for small Thai boats like the ones in my hometown, they don't have boat eyes. On the way back from Hoi An passing Lang Co town, I passed a beautiful beach with many types of boats parked.
