Hoi An Full Moon Night Hoi AN
Hoi An Full Moon Night Hoi AN

The Full Moon in Hoi An is very different from the Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan. It is completely different. In Hoi An, it is a tour of the ancient town on the full moon night of the 15th lunar day every month. The people of Hoi An in the old town area collectively turn off the lights from 6:00 PM until about 10:00 PM. From six in the evening to ten at night, Hoi An has no electric lights but uses candlelight and lanterns instead. Actually, the lanterns are electric, but they create the atmosphere of an ancient town without electricity. Mr.Hotsia

Walking in the old town of Hoi An on a full moon night, I imagined myself as a merchant coming from Thailand, sailing a junk boat to trade and then strolling around to see the town in the dark atmosphere. It was truly amazing. In my imagination of traveling to this ancient trading town, I met two local elders playing Chinese chess right in front of me under candlelight. They sat still and reached out to move the pieces.

The opponent immediately looked stressed. Walking a bit further, I found an anonymous master sitting under a circle of 10 candle flames, playing an ancient Hoi An flute right in front of me. The flute sound instantly transported me back hundreds of years in time. The atmosphere of Hoi An on this full moon night is truly unmissable. Mr.Hotsia recommends checking the Full Moon date of Hoi An before going. Click here.

Besides the nostalgic atmosphere arranged by Hoi An, there is also a paper lantern floating activity by the riverside for tourists to participate in. On the 15th lunar night, the water rises to flood up to the shop fronts. In the middle of the water, local traditional boats sing Hoi An folk songs. The sound is very different from my homeland Siam. I spent 30 minutes sitting by the water, enjoying the retro town atmosphere and ancient Vietnamese songs, reflecting that when I die, probably nothing will remain except these recorded clips.

Time passes by tens or hundreds of years. Anyone who wants to know what Hoi An is like can still watch. This is one of the inspirations for me to do my best work. Besides the nostalgic atmosphere, there is also a blindfolded pot-hitting game. After seeing a Vietnamese girl break the pot, I tried once but missed. The second time, I smashed it. The fun was in the loud cheering from left and right, which I couldn't understand, but I hit it by luck. I won a beautiful Hoi An lantern as a prize.
