Mr.Hotsia recommends hotels in Hoi An Vietnamese people eat rice like Thai people. Their food mainly includes fish, stir-fry, and soups similar to Thai cuisine, so I never went hungry while traveling in Hoi An, Vietnam. Restaurants in Hoi An offer home-style made-to-order dishes, but stir-fried basil chicken with fried egg is not available here. Importantly, food here is much cheaper than in Laos, more than half the price, and possibly cheaper than in Thailand. So you can eat well and save money for sure. Let's talk about must-try foods when visiting Hoi An. First is

It's like dry noodle soup with a little broth sold near the riverside by the Japanese Bridge at night. There are four or five shops lined up. Hoi An noodle soup is truly delicious, not just polite praise. Although it's sold all over Hoi An, my favorite place is near the Japanese Bridge at night. It suits my taste perfectly (map coordinates of my favorite noodle soup shop). The next recommended Vietnamese dish is here. This shop opens in the afternoon.

At night, Vietnamese people fill the shop and stand in line. I went in the afternoon and saw them shaping white rose-shaped desserts. I watched the making process and enjoyed the delicious food that really pleased me. Another delicious item here is the "Vietnamese pizza" — I don't know the Vietnamese name but it looks like pizza. Very tasty. "Vietnamese egg skillet" is also great. Unfortunately, on the day I filmed and ate, thick clouds prevented my camera's GPS from working. This shop is located in an alley where locals eat breakfast.

If I remember correctly, the shop is around these coordinates. Try clicking the Hoi An map at this location. This shop is special because their egg skillet offers many toppings. They add some kind of stew that tastes really good. When eating, dipping French bread is the best. Another main dish I eat almost every day is chicken rice. "Ghem ga" means rice and chicken. This dish is very delicious, partly because Vietnamese raise ducks and chickens at home, making the chicken tasty. The ghem ga shop I recommend is

The shop on the map coordinates. Remember, when ordering food in Vietnam, if you don't want MSG, say "khong" which means no. "Mi chin" means MSG. After a full meal, let me recommend some desserts. The shop is located in the fresh market area, the dry food section (see the map for this shop). All desserts here are delicious. I can recommend everything. I tried two or three kinds and found they definitely suit Thai tastes, especially Vietnamese sweet mung bean pudding, which is fragrant, sweet, and not overly sugary, just how I like it.

From desserts, I recommend a good coffee shop. This shop is near the fresh market, a prime location where you can see Vietnamese people coming and going from the market. You can watch how motorbikes carry goods in front of the market. What I really want to see is motorbikes carrying whole pigs, but I haven't seen that yet. I have seen everything else. Sit and enjoy Vietnamese coffee while watching the market scene after shopping. One thing I must mention is "Banh Chung Banh Day". Anyone visiting and staying in Hoi An will surely hear this sound.

The Banh Chung and Banh Day sellers roam all day and night, making many wonder what these foods look like. Some never get to see them. Mr.Hotsia waited and finally revealed the secret of Banh Chung Banh Day. It's a motorbike with a loudspeaker announcing sales. At the back, there's a foam box holding hot Banh Chung and Banh Day. They are inexpensive. I bought some to try; they taste similar to our zongzi. I'll end with the nighttime atmosphere of chilly Hoi An with a fresh beer glass and

5 baht in Hoi An, eat as much as you want. Recommended beer shops are located here on the map. There are many shops. Walk by and Vietnamese girls will invite you to sit and enjoy food and beer. These shops have a fair number of tourists and are safe. Prices are as listed on the menu, no price gouging. Mr.Hotsia January 2011 recommends hotels in Hoi An, eating white rose desserts which are very delicious, the first night I ate Hoi An noodle soup, revealing the secret of Banh Chung Banh Day, Vietnamese beer for 5 baht per glass.
