Population: 52,500 Administrative divisions: Khoang, Ta Giang Phinh, Trung Chai, Ta Phin, Sa Pa, San Sa Ho, Ban Phung, Lao Chai, Hau Thao, Thanh Kim, Ta Van, Su Pan, Suoi Thau, Ban Ho, Thanh Phu, Nam Sai, Nam Cang. Located 38km from Lao Cai City, Sapa is a mountainous district of Lao Cai Province. Sapa District is well-known for Sapa Townlet, a beautiful town situated at an altitude of 1,600m above sea level.

The average temperature of the area is 15-18°C. It is cool in summer and cold in winter. Visiting Sapa in summer allows you to experience four seasons in one day. In the morning and afternoon, the weather feels like spring and autumn. At noon, it is sunny and cloudless like summer. Evenings are cold. Sudden short and heavy thunderstorms may occur at noon on any summer day.

After the rain, a rainbow appears, turning Sapa into a magical land that has inspired poets for years. The best time to enjoy Sapa's scenic beauty is in April and May. Before this period, the weather can be cold and foggy; after that, it is the rainy season. In April and May, Sapa blooms with flowers and green pastures. Morning valley clouds quickly vanish.

Sapa has many natural attractions such as Ham Rong Mountain, Silver Waterfall, Rattan Bridge, Bamboo Forest, and Ta Phin Cave. It is also the starting point for climbers and scientists aiming to reach Fansipan Mountain, the highest peak in Vietnam at 3,143m.

The Hoang Lien Mountain Range is known as the Alps of the North Sea area since Fansipan is not only the highest peak in Vietnam but also in the Indochina Peninsula. The pyramid-shaped mountain is covered with clouds year-round and temperatures often drop below zero, especially at night. Approaching the resort town, you first notice detached wooden mansions and villas perched on hillsides behind thick pine forests, almost invisible in the morning fog.

Old and new villas with red roofs appear and disappear among green pomu trees, adding captivating colors to the town, unlike anywhere else in the country. The fresh and cool air in Sapa creates ideal conditions for growing temperate vegetables like cabbage, chayote, valuable medicinal herbs, and fruit trees such as plum and pear.

When Tet, the Lunar New Year Festival, arrives, the entire township fills with the pink color of peach blossoms brought from vast peach forests just outside town. Sapa is known as the kingdom of orchids. Orchid lovers are amazed by the variety found while trekking in forests filled with hundreds of orchid species with brilliant colors and fantastic shapes, such as Orchid Princess and My Fair Lady's Shoe orchids. Some orchids are named after lovely singing birds like the canary and salangane's nest.

Sapa is most beautiful in spring. Apricot, plum, and cherry blossoms are splendidly beautiful. Markets are lively and crowded, especially attractive to visitors. Minority groups come here to exchange and trade goods and products. Market days are also social occasions where locals stroll and young men and women in colorful costumes meet, date, or seek partners.

Visitors to Sapa will have opportunities to discover the unique customs of the local residents. http://www.vietnamtourism.com
