Traveling in Sapa > Sapa Travel Information. Sapa is located in northern Vietnam, not far from the Chinese border. In the past, when the French were in this region, they used this place as a resort because the weather is cool all year round. In summer, in April when I visited, the temperature was only 18 degrees Celsius. The town looks clean and beautiful with buildings that make you hardly believe this is Sapa; it looks more like Europe. This makes Sapa a world-famous tourist destination.
And for Thai people, Sapa is not far away. Won't you visit at least once? The highlight of visiting Sapa is the beautiful terraced rice fields throughout the valleys. There are many hill tribes in Sapa, Vietnam, which makes walking around the town feel very diverse. For Thai visitors, an additional highlight is "Visiting the Thai valley in Sapa," where Tai people who migrated from the same original area as Thailand live. Sapa also has a charming Sapa market and the colorful Bac Ha hill tribe market. There are also hill tribe villages.
Cat Cat village has waterfalls. Do not visit Sapa in winter as it is very cold and not enjoyable, and you won't see the beautiful terraced rice field views which are the main attraction. I think visiting Sapa in summer works well: you see beautiful views and the weather is not too cold, but it depends on your preference. I myself plan to visit Sapa again in winter to see how cold it really is. The recommended way to travel in Sapa by Mr.Hotsia is to rent a motorcycle for 120 baht per day and ride to visit Cat Cat village.
It doesn't take much time because it is similar to the Hmong villages in Thailand. Then ride to visit the Tai village, which is about 20 km from Sapa town. You can request maps of villages and tourist spots from the hotel you stay at. I recommend SON HA Hotel, which is clean, provides maps, and has friendly owners. Renting a motorcycle from the roadside without a map is not advisable. Also, motorcycle rental here does not include insurance for accidents, so you must be very careful.
It takes 1-2 days to ride a motorcycle touring depending on how much time you have. Afterwards, you can walk around Sapa town, which is lively both day and night. Sapa has a hill tribe market on Saturdays, and Bac Ha market on Sundays, but that doesn't mean there are no markets on other days; there are, but fewer people. Bac Ha market is about 70 km from Sapa towards Lao Cai. Sapa to Lao Cai is 35 km, Lao Cai to Bac Ha is 35 km approximately.
Lao Cai is a city with a train to Hanoi, near the Chinese border. It is very developed with very fast internet. Traveling to Sapa, if you come like me, you travel via Chiang Khong, cross to Huay Sai, then take a bus to Udomxay city, stay one night there, then go to Muang Khua the next day, stay one night, then take a bus to Dien Bien Phu early the next morning for 1-2 days because Dien Bien Phu is also a Tai Dam city worth visiting.
Then take a bus from Dien Bien Phu to Sapa; the bus leaves early and arrives in Sapa in the afternoon (travel from Dien Bien Phu to Sapa). Or you can take a comfortable sleeper train from Hanoi to Lao Cai, then take a bus from Lao Cai to Dien Bien Phu; there are regular buses. Alternatively, you can buy a tour from Hanoi to Sapa, which includes accommodation, train, and a hill tribe guide, which is convenient. To get to Hanoi, you can take a sleeper bus from Vientiane to Hanoi.
The bus fare is about less than 1,000 baht per person. The bus leaves in the evening and arrives in Hanoi in the afternoon. Besides sleeper buses, there are also regular buses that are cheap but tough; many tourists have said so, though I have only taken sleeper buses. The tough part is that people sleep anywhere possible. Flying from Thailand to Hanoi is good and convenient for those with more money. You can book flights, hotels in Hanoi, and accommodations in Sapa through websites. This way, you arrive with comfortable lodging ready.
There are guesthouses and hotels starting from 7 USD upwards. You must look and choose carefully as some places are not very clean. Be patient and check several places. The place I stayed at, as mentioned, is SON HA hotel. Accommodations in Sapa do not fill up easily. Many new places are opening, but if you want a good and clean place, you might want to book in advance. Click here to book hotels in Sapa. Food and dining in Sapa: if you use restaurants in tourist areas, prices are high because they cater to tourists.
I recommend walking near Sapa Lake, where there are many reasonably priced restaurants. Both Vietnamese locals and tourists eat there. Or near the open-air area where hill tribes sell goods; that area is tasty and not expensive. Try walking around or use the GPS coordinates I provided above the photo.
