Next trip to Sapa or from Sapa to Hanoi Most tourists travel by train. I have seen Vietnamese people also take the train because it is convenient; just one night and you arrive at your destination. Vietnam trains have four levels. The best is the soft sleeper cabin with four beds. This is called Soft Bed. It is a romantic room with beautiful lamp lighting, priced around 800 baht. The room has bunk beds on left and right sides. The cabin door locks for safe sleep.

The second type is Hard Bed. Each cabin has six beds arranged in three tiers, accommodating six people. This is the type Mr.Hotsia took from Lao Cai. It is a bit narrow but once asleep, it feels the same. The other two levels are regular seats, not sleepers, and are less popular with tourists. Tourists usually choose soft bed. If full, then hard bed. If still full, book another day. Even when I took hard bed, there were only three or four foreign tourists in the cabin.

I took the 9:20 PM train, arriving in Hanoi in the morning. Earlier trains arrive around 4 or 5 AM. I recommend the 9 PM train as just right. When getting off the train, if you want to walk to your accommodation near Hanoi lake by yourself, get off one station before Hanoi and it's a short walk. If crossing the large Red River, get off there. Don't get confused by smaller rivers that look similar; I got off at the wrong station before. Mr.Hotsia April 2011 Lao Cai Train Station

Once asleep, it's the same. Almost reaching Hanoi. Train toilet from Lao Cai (Sapa) on the train from Lao Cai to Hanoi Getting off the train and got off at the wrong stop again.
