In the past, when the French were still in this region, they used this place as a resort because the weather is cool all year round. In summer, in April when I visited, the temperature was only 18 degrees Celsius. The town looks clean and beautiful with buildings that make you hardly believe this is Sapa; it looks more European. This makes Sapa a world-famous tourist destination. Thai people live not far from Sapa, so why not visit at least once? The highlight of visiting Sapa is the beautiful terraced rice fields throughout the valley.

There are many hill tribes in Sapa, Vietnam, which makes walking around the town feel very diverse. For Thai people, another highlight is "Visiting the Thai valley in Sapa," where Tai people migrated from the same original homeland as Thailand. Sapa also has a charming Sapa Market and the colorful Bac Ha hill tribe market. There is also the Cat Cat hill tribe village with a waterfall. Avoid visiting Sapa in winter as it is very cold and not enjoyable.

You will also miss the beautiful views of the terraced rice fields, which are the main attraction. I think visiting Sapa in summer works well: beautiful views and not too cold. But it depends on personal preference. I myself plan to visit Sapa again in winter to see how cold it really is. The recommended way to explore Sapa by Mr.Hotsia is to rent a motorcycle for 120 baht per day and ride to Cat Cat village. It doesn't take much time because it's similar to the Hmong villages in Thailand. Then ride to visit the Tai village.

which is about 20 kilometers from Sapa town. You can ask for maps of the villages and tourist spots from the hotel you stay at. I recommend SON HA Hotel, which is clean, provides maps, and has friendly owners. Renting a motorcycle from the roadside without a map is not advisable. Also, motorcycle rental here does not include insurance for accidents, so you must be very careful and pay for any damages yourself. Spend 1-2 days riding motorcycles depending on your available time, then walk around Sapa town.

which is lively both day and night. Sapa has a hill tribe market on Saturdays, while Bac Ha market is on Sundays, but markets exist on other days with fewer people. Bac Ha market is about 70 kilometers from Sapa towards Lao Cai. Sapa to Lao Cai is 35 kilometers, Lao Cai to Bac Ha is 35 kilometers approximately. Lao Cai is a city with a train to Hanoi, near the Chinese border, very developed with very fast internet. To travel to Sapa like me, I came via Chiang Khong.

Crossed to Huay Sai, took a bus to Udomxay city, stayed one night in Udomxay, then went to Muang Khua the next day, stayed one night, then took a bus to Dien Bien Phu early the next morning for 1-2 days because Dien Bien Phu is a Thai Dam city worth visiting. Then took a bus from Dien Bien Phu to Sapa, leaving early morning and arriving in Sapa in the afternoon (travel from Dien Bien Phu to Sapa). Or you can take a comfortable sleeper train from Hanoi to Lao Cai, then a bus from Lao Cai to Dien Bien Phu; buses run regularly.

Or buy a tour from Hanoi to Sapa, which includes accommodation, train, and hill tribe guide, making it convenient. For travel to Hanoi, you can take a sleeper bus from Vientiane to Hanoi, costing less than 1,000 baht per person. The bus leaves in the evening and arrives in Hanoi in the afternoon. Besides sleeper buses, there are also regular buses which are cheaper but tough; many tourists have said so, though I have only taken sleeper buses. The tough part means passengers sleep wherever possible.

Flying from Thailand to Hanoi is good and convenient for those with more money. Book flights, hotels in Hanoi, and accommodations in Sapa through websites. You can arrive and have comfortable lodging right away, with options from guesthouses to hotels starting at 7 USD. Some places may not be very clean, so choose carefully and patiently. I stayed at SON HA hotel, which is not easy to get fully booked in Sapa.

Many new places are being built, but if you want good and clean accommodation, booking in advance is recommended. Click here to book hotels in Sapa. For food in Sapa, restaurants in tourist areas are expensive because they cater to tourists. I recommend walking near Sapa Lake where there are many affordable restaurants with both Vietnamese locals and tourists dining. Or try the open-air area where hill tribe people sell goods; the food there is delicious and reasonably priced.

Try walking around or use the GPS coordinates I provided above the pictures.
