Can Tho Floating Market http://www.hotsia.com > Can Tho Province (Can Tho) > Can Tho Floating Market Can Tho has two major floating markets: the large wholesale market in the middle of the river called Cai Rang Floating Market, and another smaller boat market with rowboats like Damnoen Saduak Floating Market and Tha Kha Floating Market, known as Phoung Dien Floating Market. This reflects the lifestyle of the Vietnamese people living along the Mekong River who rely on boats for transportation.
This makes the market lively and large, attracting tourists from all over the world to Can Tho Province. The Cai Rang Floating Market is about 6 kilometers west of Can Tho city. There are two ways to visit: one is to buy a tour from Can Tho that cruises the Can Tho River, visiting both Cai Rang and Phoung Dien markets, costing about 300 baht per person. The other way is to take a bus or taxi from the city to the market, taxi fare about 150 baht, then rent a boat for 300 baht per boat to tour the floating market.
The bus fare is less than 10 baht. Mr. Hotsia took a taxi and stayed at a hotel near Cai Rang Floating Market. The morning view from the hotel’s upper floor overlooking the floating market is very beautiful. I stayed here for two nights. In the morning, I walked to the riverbank and rented a boat to tour the floating market. This market is wholesale; locals bring large boats loaded with fruits to sell. I saw water chestnuts, pomelo, watermelon, pineapple, all piled high on traditional wooden boats.
Boat trails are visible on the Can Tho River. The market starts around 6:00 AM and ends by noon, though some boats stay afloat selling without moving. This floating market’s charm is its wholesale nature, unlike local floating markets like Damnoen Saduak or Tha Kha which are retail. Farmers bring goods from far away to sell here. I noticed roads are expanding day by day; someday this floating market might disappear. Another market is Phoung Dien Floating Market.
(Phong Dien Floating Market) is a small boat market about ten kilometers from Can Tho. I did not visit this market, so I have no photos to share.
