They bring a whole cow to roast. I thought I must try it. During my 4-night stay in Phnom Penh, I passed by every day and saw the process from lighting the fire. Finally, on the last day before I traveled to Battambang, I got to taste Phnom Penh roast beef. The roast beef shop starts selling in the early evening. Phnom Penh locals love to eat it. They also sell Angkor beer and fresh Ancher beer. I chose Ancher beer because I liked it since I had it in Siem Reap. Eating it with roast beef did not disappoint me at all. The beef was tender, slightly sweet, and very delicious.
I ate it with one plate of steamed rice and ordered another plate of roast beef. It was excellent. The only downside was that I thought it was a bit expensive at 150 baht per plate. On my second, third, and fourth trips back to Phnom Penh, I went to the same shop, but they no longer had whole cows to roast for five shops. Upon inquiry, I learned that the government prohibited roasting whole cows on the street as before. Now they roast behind the shop, cut the meat into pieces, and grill them in front of the shop.
