Wat Phnom is an ancient temple built on a hill in the center of Phnom Penh. In front of the temple, there are many fruit bats hanging from the trees. Climbing the temple requires a bit of effort walking uphill.

Inside the shrine, there is a red-faced Buddha statue that looks like the Buddha is shy, which is unusual and worth visiting. There is a small entrance fee to visit the temple. I recommend going early in the morning when it is not hot. Visit the morning market and then walk around taking photos. This temple is highly respected by the Khmer people. If you come to Phnom Penh, you should not miss it. Wat Phnom was built in 1916. Information about Wat Phnom from Wikipedia: Wat Phnom ("Temple of the Mountains") in Cambodia was built in 1373 and stands 27 meters above the ground.

It is the tallest religious structure in the city. Legend says that Daun Penh, a wealthy widow, found a large koki tree in the river. Inside the tree, she found four bronze Buddha statues. Lady Penh built a small shrine on an artificial hill to protect the sacred statues. Eventually, this became a sacred site and sanctuary where people come to make blessings and pray.

Another story about the founding of the temple suggests that King Ponhea Yat built the sanctuary (vihear) when he moved his capital from Angkor to Phnom Penh in 1422. The prominent stupa immediately west of the sanctuary contains the ashes of the king and his royal family. Wat Phnom is the center of celebrations during Khmer New Year and Pchum.
