Traveling Phnom Penh, Phnom Penh 2012

The first time I traveled through Poipet via Siem Reap to Phnom Penh. The second time I entered via Chau Doc, Vietnam, taking a boat through the Vietnamese and Cambodian river checkpoints, cruising to Phnom Penh. This third time I entered via Poipet during the Khmer New Year (Songkran) wanting to see how Khmer Songkran is celebrated. This is the main purpose of this trip. For Khmer Songkran, they do not play water splashing like in our country. Khmer Songkran is a merit-making event for the Khmer New Year. People go to the temple in the morning.

At Wat Phnom, the large temple in Phnom Penh, there are games in the morning and afternoon. The life of Khmer people both in the city and countryside is full of celebrations. Most shops close for the long holiday. Even some drivers might drink beer while driving (I only saw it once). Therefore, I do not recommend visiting Phnom Penh or Cambodia during Songkran except for visiting Angkor Wat. During this trip, I still ate at the same Phnom Penh grilled beef restaurant. I almost missed it because on merit-making days they do not grill beef at the shop.

On Songkran day, the shop closes completely. I arrived one day before closing. Phnom Penh roasted beef is still delicious and tender as usual. Acchor Beer pairs excellently with roasted beef. I also greeted a Thai brother selling near the Angkor Mithona Guesthouse, located opposite the Khmer temple called "Wat Unalom," not far from the market. His shop offers made-to-order food and the highlight is Pong Mon Ang, a Khmer-style grilled egg, highly recommended. Accommodation in Phnom Penh.

Today I am working in Phnom Penh on Songkran, April 13, 2012. Accommodation during Songkran is not very full, many vacancies. But I would like to recommend where to stay when traveling to Phnom Penh, close to food, attractions, and walking along the Tonle Sap River. The accommodation area Mr.Hotsia recommends is the hotel and guesthouse area north of the Royal Palace, along the temple and market by the Tonle Sap River. To be clear, you may try staying at the hotel where Mr.Hotsia stayed.

I stayed at Angkor Mithona Guesthouse, located opposite the Khmer temple called "Wat Unalom," not far from the market. You can walk to the Royal Palace or to Wat Phnom, which is doable. This area has many hotels to choose from, with restaurants for tourists and local food at reasonable prices. Some vendors speak a little Thai in two or three shops. You can book hotels in Phnom Penh here when arriving by bus.

No matter where the bus comes from, it stops at the bus station. Tuk-tuk brokers will ask where you want to go. Tell them you want to go to "Wat Unalom," which is near the palace by the Tonle Sap River. Tuk-tuk owners have favorite guesthouses that give good commissions and will strongly encourage you to stay with them. If you don't want that, insist that they take you to the temple. Some tuk-tuks may not want to take you to the guesthouse, so ask to be driven to the temple. Behind the temple is the grilled beef shop I ate at.

There is an alley with affordable and good accommodation. The hotel I stayed at is on the corner with a restaurant downstairs. For confidence in your stay, I recommend booking Phnom Penh hotels via Agoda first through the website I prepared. Choose the area I mentioned to ensure accommodation and cheaper prices than walk-in, except hotels not affiliated with Agoda where you can just walk in. The starting price for accommodation in Phnom Penh is about 15 USD for a standard room. nr.hotsia April mr.hotsia city clips.
