Originally, the prison was a school. Toul Sleng is also known as S-21 (Security Office 21). If you visit Phnom Penh, you won't be confused. Tours sold to foreigners use the name S-21, while Cambodians call it Toul Sleng. As for the translation, I asked Cambodians and they said there is no translation. On January 7, 1979, the party and government collected all remaining evidence at S-21 such as photos, films, prisoner confession archives, torture documents, and fourteen victim bodies.
(Including women) to welcome foreign and national guests to visit the Toul Sleng Genocide Museum. Toul Sleng prison is surrounded by double corrugated iron sheets and dense barbed wire. This torture prison was converted from a high school. In front of every building, there is a dense barbed wire fence mesh that prevents anyone from jumping off the top.
The prison walls at the torture rooms have glass installed to reduce the screams from prisoners during torture. Fourteen bodies were discovered by the United Front for National Salvation of Kampuchea (UFNSK) on January 7, 1979. Most of the bodies showed signs of torture. The last fourteen victims were killed by S-21 officers before they fled. Wooden poles in the garden area, once used as exercise centers for students, were converted into various torture devices.
Prisoners' hands were tied behind their backs with ropes and hung upside down repeatedly until they lost consciousness. Guards would dunk prisoners' heads into buckets filled with urine or chickens to force them to regain consciousness. The number of prisoners held in Toul Sleng prison was 154 in 1975, 2,250 in 1976, 2,350 in 1977, and 5,765 in 1978. These numbers do not include the children killed by the Khmer Rouge, which is estimated to exceed 20,000.
The imprisonment period ranged from 2-4 months, but for some "political prisoners," torture could last between six and seven months. Mr. Hotsia recommends not visiting Toul Sleng too early in the morning or too late in the evening because it is quiet and empty. You might scare yourself and have haunting thoughts because the atmosphere of Toul Sleng prison is extraordinary. When traveling, it's worth hiring a car to visit the Killing Fields first and then stop here afterward.
