Travel from Paklai to Xayaburi: A route for adventure lovers
I, mr.hotsia, had an unforgettable journey from Paklai town to Xayaburi town in Xayaburi Province, Laos. This area is still rarely visited by tourists, making each trip full of excitement and a feeling of discovering something new. The route is about 178 kilometers, but it’s not an ordinary path. It involves continuous mountain climbs and descents, winding through the hills, similar to the route from Nan to Phrae that I traveled before, but this one feels distinctly different.
For those wanting to try the local bus from Paklai to Xayaburi, be prepared. The bus departs from Paklai Northern Bus Station only four times a day, mostly in the morning. On busy days, the bus leaves on schedule, but on quieter days, you may have to wait. This makes the schedule somewhat unpredictable. The bus station is very small, with only one local pho shop open. I, mr.hotsia, once ate there; the simple pho tasted like a warm meal at a friend’s home.
Get ready for mountain roads and scenic views along the way
Do not underestimate this route. Even if you ride a high-roofed songthaew like I, mr.hotsia, who rarely gets motion sickness, you still need to be careful because the road is full of curves and constant mountain climbs and descents. I had to use smelling salts several times. If you drive your own car, you can relax as the road is quite good, and the trip takes about 2 hours.
One of my favorite parts is the beautiful scenery on both sides of the road. Small villages scattered along the way give a real sense of mountain life. I, mr.hotsia, enjoy stopping to take photos and chat with locals when possible. People live simply amid pristine nature.
Xayaburi Town: An extraordinary destination
Upon arriving in Xayaburi town, the bus station is compact but the surrounding atmosphere is livelier than Paklai. I, mr.hotsia, explored this town and experienced the peacefulness of a small town still rarely visited by tourists, feeling like discovering a hidden treasure in this quiet province.

Connections to nearby towns in Xayaburi Province
Xayaburi Province is vast and has many interesting towns I, mr.hotsia, have visited, including Ngeun town where I stayed atRuen Phuen Phen Guesthousewhich is clean and has a nice atmosphere, perfect for travelers wanting to rest before continuing. Also, Hongsa town offers rich Tai Lue culture to explore. Read about the morning market and local life there atHongsa Morning Marketwhere I recorded my detailed experiences.
For those wanting to experience authentic nature and deep Lao local culture, I recommend exploring the northern route to Khop and Chiang Hon towns. See the valley town atmosphere I, mr.hotsia, documented inTravel to Khop, Chiang Hon: Imaginary Valley Townswhich offers different impressions and stories from other towns in Xayaburi Province.
Local food and lifestyle not to be missed
Along the way from Paklai to Xayaburi, I, mr.hotsia, enjoyed simple yet flavorful dishes like “pho” at Paklai bus station. I also had the chance to try local foods in Hongsa, such as grilled fermented fish with authentic Lao spices, and fried pra ra with fried egg, a favorite local dish of Xayaburi Lao people (see detailed cooking video atCruising Laos 10: Fragrant and Delicious Fried Pra Ra with Fried Egg)
The villagers here still live simply and rely on nature. I spoke with many locals who said fishing in the Mekong River remains an important activity, especially in Tha Suang village where I stayed in a warm homestay with neighbors (read the story atPak Ngum Homestay by the Mekong River, Laos)
