Dewei Sweetmeat Coconut Sticky Rice: A dessert you must try on the southern Myanmar route

I, mr.hotsia, just returned from a trip to Dawei, Tanintharyi Region, Myanmar, and one of the foods I don’t want you to miss isCoconut Sticky Riceor what locals in Dawei call Dewei Sweetmeat, a traditional dessert that deeply reflects the lifestyle and culture of the local people.

Dawei is located in the Tanintharyi Region on the Myanmar side bordering southern Thailand. Anyone who has read my articleTraveling Dawei, Tanintharyi Region on Your Ownmight imagine that this is not just an ordinary border town, but a place where many locals speak Thai because many young people from Dawei work in Thailand in rubber tapping and fishing. This makes communication with Dawei locals very easy for Thai travelers like me.

When I arrived at the Dawei morning market, located by the Dawei River near the Wai Market, I saw the bustling activity of vendors and fresh goods tightly packed. There were plenty of fresh sea fish almost like the Kat Ba Island market in Vietnam but cheaper. I walked from my accommodation, Golden Hotel, not far to reach it. This market is consideredDawei’s Ultimate Fish Marketwhich mr.hotsia recommends you experience at least once in person.

Among the foods I tried at this market, Dawei coconut sticky rice was the highlight that made me fall in love immediately. The sticky rice was cooked until soft and chewy, topped with fresh coconut milk that was fragrant and creamy but not overly sweet. The kind vendor let me taste a lot until I almost had to order another plate. The coconut milk here is made from a traditional recipe using freshly grated and pressed coconut, giving it a sweet aroma different from the coconut milk I’ve had in Thailand.

While walking through the market, I also tried Burmese rice noodles served with a curry containing large fish eggs, full of flavor and very fresh ingredients. These fish eggs are truly the best of Dawei’s seafood. Seafood lovers should not miss this either. If you want to know more about seafood here, try readingDawei Seafoodwhich I have also written about.

Lifestyle and Atmosphere of Dawei Morning Market

The Dawei morning market is like the heart of this small town. I walked around looking at fresh vegetables, fruits, and spices that locals sold at affordable prices. Most products are local and the freshest seafood. The people here are very warm. When they learned I was a Thai tourist, many tried to speak Thai or helped as much as they could. Even though sometimes communication wasn’t 100% clear, their efforts made my trip smooth and more memorable.

I still remember ordering Burmese coffee at the market, which normally contains milk, coffee, and a white powder giving a unique sweet and creamy taste. When the vendor didn’t have change, another Dawei local helped by exchanging money for me, showing that people here truly help each other.

Dewei Sweetmeat Coconut Sticky Rice and mr.hotsia’s Memories

For me, Dawei coconut sticky rice is not just a dessert but part of the lifestyle and culture I experienced firsthand. Eating coconut sticky rice amidst the lively atmosphere of the fresh market by the Dawei River, with familiar accents in conversations, made me feel like I was traveling back in time to a simple yet charming past.

If you plan to visit Dawei, don’t forget to wake up early and stroll through this morning market. I guarantee you will find delicious coconut sticky rice and many other foods I have described inTanintharyi Region CuisineandMade-to-Order Food in Daweias well.

If you want to experience a high viewpoint of Dawei to enjoy the city view and relax with coffee after the market walk, I recommend going to a department store building in town. The top floor has a coffee and smoothie shop with great flavors and a unique view of Dawei. You can also conveniently plan your Dawei sea trip with motorbike taxi services I mentioned in my articleTraveling Dawei, Tanintharyi Region on Your Own
