The Tai Yai New Year event in Kengtung is held annually, along with the major Tai Yai New Year celebrations in Shan State, rotating among major cities like Kengtung, Sipaw, and Taunggyi.
What I experienced was a simple annual New Year event held before the international New Year. In 2015, it was held on December 9, 2015, lasting several days. There were stage performances by the Tai Yai people, including sword dances, bird dances, drum dances, and Tai Yai traditional dances on a large central city stage open to everyone without VIP seating blocking views. I really enjoyed this kind of event. The atmosphere included a Ferris wheel and a traveling circus troupe, which I believe might be the last of its kind. I was very excited as the performers came from China.
There were bears, lions, and a Chinese acrobat show featuring the Iron Neck Lama. The performances were truly amazing. The event also featured a popular local game called "Gourd, Crab, Fish" that people in Kengtung enjoy. I played for fun and recorded clips to share. The highlight of the event was the authentic Tai Yai circle dance around the venue. The dancers were divided by households, and only young women from Kengtung, not housewives, participated as dancers singing live Tai Yai songs. Visitors could buy tickets to join the Tai Yai circle dance with the Kengtung girls, making it the ultimate highlight of the Tai Yai New Year celebration.
Don't miss dancing with the girls for a song or two, or even two to three hours, haha. Mr.Hotsia enjoyed the trip. There was a grilled pork shop in front of the event near the spicy noodle soup shop. The atmosphere of the Tai Yai New Year in Kengtung included buying Tai Yai shirts to wear. GPS coordinates: 21°17'28.043"N, 99°36'9.977"E (POI). The traveling circus from China was surrounded by Tai Yai people. This group of girls was from the Kad Tao village where I had lunch.
