Use a passport and Myanmar visa to enter via the Mae Sot border by car. For traveling to Mawlamyine, Mon State, I recommend the easiest and most convenient way is by land through Mae Sot border, opposite Myawaddy town, Myanmar. I have confirmed with Mae Sot immigration that travelers can pass through Myanmar and exit from other points. Many Thai tourists, both groups and backpackers, use this route. To summarize, it is confirmed that passage is allowed.

After crossing the Myawaddy border, take a local vehicle from Myawaddy to Pa-an city, which takes about 4-5 hours. From Pa-an, you may stay overnight or continue traveling to Mawlamyine for 2 hours. I have seen many people fly into Yangon and then travel by road. The journey from Yangon by car takes about 8 hours or overnight to arrive in Mawlamyine early morning. I have not yet traveled via the new border at Kanchanaburi. Before coming, I asked Mae Sot immigration.

They contacted Kanchanaburi immigration via Line, who said foreigners with visas can pass into Myanmar, but Myanmar immigration advised to enter via Mae Sot instead. When I travel through the Kanchanaburi border into Myanmar, I will inform the website. On the day I wrote this, I received news that the Thai and Myanmar governments have agreed to abolish visas for each other. By boat, you can travel from Pa-an, the capital of Karen State, with boats departing that take about 2 hours and cost 150 baht.

You can inquire about boats at Soe Brothers Guest House. Boats do not run daily; it depends on the number of tourists. For me, Mawlamyine is a pleasant place with convenient transportation. Motorcycle taxi fares in town are inexpensive, about 20-30 baht. It is a city worth visiting and should be done soon before many changes occur. By air, Nok Air flies from Mae Sot directly to Mawlamyine with tickets costing 1,500 baht. I heard that early on, not many people use this service.

The plane is a leased aircraft, so some days may have issues. It will take time to stabilize. If anyone plans to visit Mawlamyine now, I think it is cheap and the best value before prices possibly increase. Flights from Yangon to Mawlamyine are operated by Myanma Airways with two flights per week on Thursdays and Saturdays. The ticket costs 1,500 baht and the flight takes about 40 minutes. Traveling by train to Yangon.

Or from Yangon to Mawlamyine by train, there are two daily trains crossing the Salween River. The first departs Yangon at 06:00 and arrives in Mawlamyine at 15:30. The second departs Yangon at 07:15 and arrives in Mawlamyine at 18:30. For the return trip to Yangon, the morning train leaves Mawlamyine at 06:00 and arrives in Yangon at 15:45. The next train departs Mawlamyine at 10:00 and arrives in Yangon at

20:00. It is recommended to book at least 3 days in advance. For traveling within Mawlamyine city, motorcycle taxis charge 500-1000-1500-2000 kyats, which is convenient and affordable. Motorcycle taxis are available throughout the city. Walking is also an option. The city stretches along the Salween River. The riverside road is good for walking and enjoying the river view. The next road inward, parallel to the riverside, has shops, stores, and restaurants. You can stroll about 1 kilometer.

If tired of walking, just call a motorcycle taxi back to your accommodation. Take the hotel business card with you when going out. Mr.Hotsia October 2013 recommends affordable and good hotels in Mawlamyine: Breeze Guesthouse (where I stayed 6 nights), the cheapest and best in Mawlamyine; Cinderella Hotel, not far from the river and city center, within walking distance to the market and convenient for visiting Kyaikthanlan Pagoda; Attrann Hotel, near the bridge to Mottama, with beautiful river views and close to Mawlamyine morning market.
