There are Burmese people who have lived in Thailand and opened several delicious Thai restaurants, about four or five. If you want to eat stir-fried basil with fried egg, this city won't disappoint. Along the Salween River, there are 2-3 restaurants built over the water, serving local Burmese food with a nice presentation. I thought they were expensive, so I didn't try them. For breakfast, I ate hotel food with boiled eggs.
Bread and coffee for breakfast. For lunch, I ate at Chinese or Burmese restaurants or walked to find half a roasted duck for 150 baht, like the one I had at Peking Restaurant. While walking around downtown Mawlamyine, there are coffee shops and freshly steamed buns along the street, popular with locals. I tried them and they were delicious, giving me a glimpse into the lifestyle of the Mawlamyine people. For dinner or nighttime meals, walk 200 meters to the left from the hotel.
This is the Mawlamyine night market by the Salween River, with about 10 stalls selling grilled food, fried rice, and roti. There are tables to sit and enjoy the dark river view with a cool breeze, creating a great atmosphere. Actually, it’s not a late-night market, it closes around 10 PM. There is a very tasty shrimp fried rice stall there, affordable and delicious, perfect for dining by the Salween River with a cool breeze. Not far from the river, located in the city center within walking distance to the market. Convenient for visiting Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda (Golden Rock). Attram Hotel is near the bridge to Mottama with beautiful river views, close to the Mawlamyine morning market. Peking Duck restaurant - I didn’t realize the food was cold when smelling it. The shrimp stir-fry at the nun’s place at Kematiri Monastery in Maw Mya was made for me to eat. I ate temple food at Kematiri Monastery with Burmese people of Tai Yai descent; we could communicate a little.
