Mawlamyine Night Market, Nopura Pagoda, Tree Rock, Pa Win Seng Taw Ya, Sunset at Kyaiktiyo, Sunset at Golden Rock. Burmese people study Kyaiktiyo, foreigners call it Golden Rock. It is located in Mon State, Myanmar, in the northern part of the state, 3 hours from Pa-an city. It is a round rock perched on a high mountainside. To get there, you must take a truck from the village below for about 1 hour. In the past, it required several hours of walking.
Now the road reaches the top, which is a good thing for tourists. It is recommended to stay at the bottom. Accommodation is San Sha Guesthouse, priced at 10 USD per night or about 300 Baht. There are many hotels and accommodations at the bottom, but this one is right next to the truck station going up the mountain. The truck service to Kyaiktiyo Pagoda operates from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The fare is 2,500 Kyat for the back seat and 3,000 Kyat for the front seat. Note that the last truck down the mountain leaves at 6:00 PM.
When I went, I was busy taking photos of the sunset and Kyaiktiyo at night and missed the last truck down. I saw many people up there and thought there would still be trucks, but it turned out the Burmese people were there for the full moon and stayed overnight. The Thai visitors I saw also stayed at hotels up there. So I had no truck down and had to hitch a ride. There is a last truck for workers going down around 1 AM. I recommend staying at the top if you want to watch the sunrise and sunset from Kyaiktiyo and stay overnight to take photos late into the night in cool, comfortable weather.
Witness the lifestyle of Burmese people who come to worship at Kyaiktiyo Pagoda, especially on full moon nights. There are several hotels up there: Golden Sunrise Hotel, Bawga Theiddhi Hotel, Kyaik Hto Hotel, Thuwunna Bomi Mountain View Hotel. If you have the budget, staying at the top is better to avoid missing the last truck. Especially for women, it is highly recommended. Mr.Hotsia October 2013 recommends hotels at Kyaiktiyo top.
