Forest Monk Win Seng Taw Ya Kyaikthanlan Paya Kyaikhtalarn Monastery in Mawlamyine City or Kyaikthanlan Pagoda or Siam Phaya Pagoda, built when the Mon defeated Siam. This pagoda is legendary for Maw Mya who swore love to Lord Suk Kasem (read the legend of the nun Maw Mya that I discovered here). Kyaikhtalarn Pagoda is located on a hill in the middle of Mawlamyine city, surrounded by local houses. It is a beautiful spot to watch the sunrise and sunset.
Sunset at Kyaikhtalarn Pagoda shows a beautiful red sun ball reflecting over the Salween River, an amazing sight. While I was in Mawlamyine, I took a motorcycle ride to watch the sunset for 15 baht one way from the guesthouse I stayed at, The Breeze Guesthouse. Returning in the dark cost 700 kyats or 20 baht. The price is affordable. Staying several days means many sunsets, each different. When traveling, don’t rush to leave; wait until the sky turns blue to take beautiful photos before heading back.
While watching the sunset, imagine that once Maw Mya and her lover swore their love here and may have watched the sunset together at this spot. mr.hotsia October 27, 2013 Recommended affordable and good hotels in Mawlamyine: Breeze Guesthouse (I stayed here 6 nights, the cheapest and best in Mawlamyine), Cinderella Hotel (not far from the river, located downtown, walking distance to the market, convenient for visiting Kyaikhtalarn Pagoda), and Attrann Hotel.
Near the bridge to Mottama, the river view is very beautiful, right next to Mawlamyine morning market.
