Traveling Malamyaing on Your Own: Mottama Town 2013

Thai people recognize this name from the lesson about Makatho. Mottama Town is the old capital of the Mon people. Mottama is not an island in the water but a land connected to Yangon. In the past, to visit Mottama, you had to take a boat from Malamyaing, but now there is a bridge. You can take a motorcycle taxi for about 15,000 Kyat from Malamyaing side to visit by yourself. Usually, the price is for a round trip because there is nothing much on that side and the lifestyle is completely new.

There is nothing much to see except the white pagoda by the Salween River. I recommend hiring a motorcycle taxi for a round trip. I do not recommend renting and riding a motorcycle yourself in any town if you do not have enough money to cover in case of loss, accident, or other incidents. I personally stopped renting motorcycles a long time ago to reduce risk. The round trip price should be about 3 USD or 100 Baht, which is not expensive. Don't forget to visit Sarphum Island, Shampoo Island on the way back. Just tell them you want to go from the start.

So they won't charge extra later. You have to pay the boat fare to cross to the island by yourself. Mottama Town has fewer Mon people living there and more Burmese people. The pure Mon people live in groups but are also spread throughout Mon State. The Mon mainly live in Mudon Town and Mon Island (Bilu Island / Ogre Island). On Mon Island, there are more than 40 Mon villages. You can take a ferry to visit for 60 Baht. The boat runs every hour.

Mon Island is very large. Renting a motorcycle to circle the island costs more than 400-500 Baht, which few people do. Most tours are arranged by Khun Kai at The Breeze Guesthouse. He charges a reasonable price. If you have little money, just take the ferry to walk around a bit and return. There are two piers to cross to Mon Island: one at the island's tip where horse carts are used, and the boat leaves from the pier near the market. You can explore around there and then get a ride to the middle of the island to catch the hourly boat back. When I wrote this, I didn't have enough money to visit Mon Island.

Otherwise, I would have shared photos and clips with you. mr.hotsia 27 recommends affordable and good hotels in Malamyaing: Breeze Guesthouse (I stayed here 6 nights, the cheapest and best in Malamyaing), Cinderella Hotel (not far from the river, located in town, walking distance to the market, convenient for visiting Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda), Attrann Hotel (near the bridge to Mottama, beautiful river view, close to Malamyaing morning market).
