Hue Walking Street: The riverside lifestyle along the Perfume River that mr.hotsia must share
Many years ago when mr.hotsia arrived in Hue, the walking street was barely visible. Along thePerfume RiverorPerfume Riverthere were only small stalls, and some days people sold simple goods in a dark corner of a nearby park. But today, when I returned, Hue Walking Street has developed into a vibrant shopping and meeting place for the younger generation. This walking street stretches about 300 meters along both sides of the Perfume River. It is filled with shops selling clothes and souvenirs that clearly reflect the unique Vietnamese identity.
If you enjoy leisurely walks and soaking in the atmosphere of a small town without over-commercialization, Hue Walking Street is a great choice. I saw groups of Vietnamese youth happily shopping for clothes, and as a tourist, I enjoyed picking simple souvenirs. One of my favorite gifts is the “glass bottle with letters” where names are engraved inside beautiful glass bottles, costing about 30 baht only. It’s quite affordable for such a special souvenir. I ordered one with my name and my partner’s name to keep as a memento.
Local Handicrafts and Art Performances by the Perfume River
One of the things that impressed mr.hotsia the most this time was how Hue Walking Street has developed to include Vietnamese handicrafts and art displays along the Perfume River. The paintings and crafts here are unlike the clothes you can buy anywhere else because they are unique and truly represent local wisdom. I saw local artists painting by hand and selling directly to tourists, creating a lively atmosphere for the walking street.
There are also beautifully carved fruit stalls that look almost too good to eat. Various carved fruits are arranged delicately as decorations. I believe anyone who sees this art in person will fall in love with it just like I did.
Evening Strolls with the Atmosphere Along the Perfume River
When it comes to evening walks in Hue, I recommend visiting between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM at the Perfume River bridge. During this time, the bridge lights up with colorful changing lights. Young Vietnamese couples sit by the river, creating a warm and relaxing atmosphere. In January, the weather is comfortably cool, perfect for strolling and observing the local lifestyle in Hue.Read more about night walks in Hue here
Along the river, there are a few vendors selling goods, mostly catering to tourists from cruise ships or international tours. There are also small restaurants and bars serving beer at very cheap prices, less than 10 baht per glass. You can visit Hue without worrying about expenses.
Delicious and Affordable Food Spots in Hue
If you visit Hue and don’t try the local food, it’s like you haven’t really been here. Unlike Hanoi with pho or Hoi An with noodle soup, Hue offers a hot noodle dish called Mi, eaten in the morning or evening during the cold January season. It’s very tasty and helps warm you up, priced very economically at only 20-30 baht per bowl.
There are also very cheap rice with curry dishes available in many varieties such as pork, fish, or chicken. These eateries are common in Hue, and you can have a full meal for under 40 baht. The food is delicious and suits Thai tastes like mine. I stayed in Hue for several weeks and mainly ate this dish.Read more about food in Hue
Relaxing in Hue with Budget-Friendly Accommodation
For accommodation in Hue, mr.hotsia recommends staying near the Perfume River, within walking distance to the Perfume River bridge, Dong Ba Market, and the old palace, so you don’t need to rely on motorbikes or cyclo rides that waste time and risk overcharging.Accommodation in HueThere are many options, but prices generally start around 300 baht per night for air-conditioned rooms with hot water and fast Wi-Fi, suitable for travelers seeking comfort at an affordable price.
I stayed at DMZ Hotel where the water pressure was strong, hot water was just right, and the internet was very fast, allowing me to watch movies or upload videos to YouTube without interruption.
