Today Dien Bien Phu has hotels accommodating tourists located in the alley next to the bus station. The hotels are good and cheap, with fast internet. The restaurant opposite the bus station is still as delicious as it was ten years ago. The difference is that the people of Dien Bien now know tourists better. There are massage shops serving tourists today (the shop at the bridge neck walking to the monument). Traveling to Dien Bien Phu in the past required transferring vehicles at Khua town, Phongsaly province, Laos. In the good old days, it was easy to transfer vehicles from Udomxay bus station.

Moreover, taking a morning bus from Luang Namtha would arrive in Dien Bien Phu by evening. On this trip to Dien Bien Phu and northern Vietnam, many asked me about my ethnicity. I feel that northern Vietnamese do not have very good feelings toward Chinese people. If they know we are Thai, not Chinese, they treat us much better. If Chinese, I don't know. I recommend staying at Khach San Ban Rom hotel, Nam Rom hotel, located 200 meters from the bus station towards the monument, right at the bridge neck on the monument side.

I stayed at this hotel ten years ago. Back then, it was not renovated, with mosquito nets and many mosquitoes. Now it has been renovated very well, with air conditioning and hot water. On the lowest floor at the back of the hotel is a Vietnamese-style massage shop charging a few hundred baht per hour, relieving travel fatigue from Laos. Nam Rom hotel is an old hotel completely renovated. I stayed here ten years ago when it still had mosquito nets.

Now it is well maintained, priced at 450 baht for a twin room, clean, with fast internet, not far from the bus station. If coming from the bus station, walk towards the tall monument on the mountain. The hotel is riverside with a beautiful view and offers massage services at the back for 200 baht per hour. For further travel to Sapa or other cities, the bus station staff speak good English. You can buy tickets to Sapa or other destinations in advance. On this trip, I bought a ticket to Lai Chau province.

Lai Chau is just past halfway from Dien Bien Phu towards Sapa. Tourist spots in Dien Bien Phu include the Tai Dam morning market, the central city monument, and the Dien Bien battlefield in the city center, all walkable.
