I have some additional information from Wikipedia. The Tai Dam [Black Tai] or Lao Song are a Tai ethnic group originally from the former Sip Song Chau Tai region or the Black and Red River basins in northern Vietnam, which is the original homeland of the Tai Dam. During the French colonial period in Vietnam and Laos, the tribes living in the Black River basin were called Tai Dam. The name Tai Dam does not mean they live in the Black River basin.
The name comes from the fact that this Tai group traditionally wears black clothing dyed with indigo or dyer's woad. The term "Lao Song" is not ethnically Lao; it is used because of their migration through Laos. Calling them "Song people" or "Black Tai" is more accurate, similar to how they are called "Song" or "Black Tai" in Phetchaburi province, Thailand, besides the northeast and northern regions where Black Tai have migrated.
The Black Tai have also migrated to central Thailand, where they are called Lao Song. It is believed that "Song" comes from the Tai Dam word "Suang" or "Sung," meaning pants, because the Black Tai traditionally wear black pants. During the reign of King Taksin the Great, when he attacked Vientiane in 1779, he relocated Black Tai migrants from Sip Song Chau Tai to settle in Phetchaburi. Later in 1792,
during the reign of King Rama I, and in 1838 during King Rama III's reign, the army marched to attack Lan Xang and relocated more people. Today, they are settled across many provinces such as Ratchaburi, Nakhon Pathom, Suphanburi, Phichit, Phitsanulok, Kanchanaburi, Lopburi, Saraburi, Loei, Chumphon, and Surat Thani. They are now called Thai Song or "Black Tai" living in Mai Chau.
