This is my third time visiting Dien Bien Phu. The first time was backpacking solo in 2007, the second time with my nephew in 2011, and the third time at the end of 2012 to explore all provinces of Vietnam. The latest Dien Bien Phu has a monument in the city center on a high mountain.
Walk up to the top to enjoy the beautiful view of Dien Bien Phu city. The Dien Bien Phu market remains unchanged. Hotels in Dien Bien Phu still require mosquito nets for sleeping because the city has many mosquitoes. Traveling to Dien Bien Phu today is no longer complicated because there are buses departing from Chai or Udomchai city in the morning, arriving in Dien Bien Phu by evening or night. No need to stay overnight in Khwa, Phongsaly province anymore because the bridge over the Ou River in Khwa is now completed.
The roads are much better now, making travel to Dien Bien Phu more convenient. For those traveling through Laos, Dien Bien Phu to Sapa is okay. I stayed in Dien Bien Phu for two days. The first night I stayed at a hotel opposite the Dien Bien Phu bus station, which was not good due to poor internet and accommodation. The second night I moved to a hotel in the alley next to the bus station called Phuong Hien, which was affordable with fast internet (watch the clip at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhr1CXvwWbc).
As for attractions in Dien Bien Phu city, they remain the same with the Dien Bien Phu battlefield tunnel as the main highlight and the morning and evening markets with many Thai Dam people adding vibrant colors. On my third visit, I continued to Son La city. The mountain views of northern Vietnam are very beautiful. Another memorable experience in Dien Bien Phu was enjoying Dien Bien Phu white liquor with local-style snacks at a shop opposite the bus station.
