Hoi An Hoi An Market

Hoi An's morning market is located next to the river. In the early morning, locals come to buy shrimp, shellfish, crabs, and fish in abundance. Some buy to resell. At the pier, fish caught from the river are unloaded. Vietnamese people actively select and buy fresh fish here. At first, I was walking around the outer area and thought this market might not be interesting, but by the riverside, it was a different story. I liked the variety of freshwater and sea fish and the Vietnamese way of tying crabs using banana fiber rope.

They don't use rubber bands like we do. When the banana fiber rope rots, they replace it with a new one, like the crab in the picture above that was stepped on and then tied again with banana fiber rope. Most sellers wear the traditional Vietnamese conical hats, while buyers sometimes wear them. I tried buying one and couldn't take it off because it protects from sun, heat, and rain without feeling hot on the face. I brought one from Vietnam but gave it to a coffee seller at Phra That Phanom.

Actually, there are two or three other fresh markets in Hoi An that I also visited, but none were as impressive as this large, historic market. The market in Vietnamese is called 'Chợ'. If you get lost, just ask a Vietnamese person, and they will say it in a phrase. Just watch their hand and follow where they point. mr.hotsia January 2011 Recommending hotels in Hoi An.
