My Son is a World Heritage site near Hoi An, about 30 kilometers away. For visiting, I think buying a one-day tour is worthwhile. Going there by car, then passing by to see incense making, Vietnamese hat making, then going to My Son. On the way back, take a boat to visit the village on the island. It's a valuable one-day tour and not expensive. My Son is a place where the ancient Cham people built thousands of years ago before moving to build Angkor Wat, similar to Wat Phu temple.
I observed that places where they built these structures to worship Shiva must have a mountain or something unusual before choosing to build there. At My Son, there is My Son mountain. At Wat Phu Champasak temple, there is also one. What's interesting is how the Cham people built it so that after thousands of years, the bricks still look beautiful and not deteriorated. The guide said they built the temple first, then fired the bricks, and applied honey to prevent termites or anything that would cause easy damage.
The Cham people are truly amazing (Cham are the original locals who lived in the Hoi An area thousands of years ago). What impressed me the most was meeting a guide who spoke very engagingly. His expressions and face were like I was watching a Hollywood movie. He explained the story wonderfully with great gestures. I recorded several versions of the clip. I've uploaded them, so watch them slowly. There is also a zoom version. mr.hotsia January 2011 recommends hotels in Hoi An at My Son, Vietnam. This amazing guide is really great.
